In 1998, Mulan joined the ranks of Disney princesses like Jasmine and Cinderella. Mulan is a courageous young woman willing to risk her life and go to war to save the life of her father. Along with her trusty horse Khan, a dragon named Mushu, and her friends Yao, Chi Fu, and Shang, it is up to her to save China.
Did you know? Disney's Mulan is based on an ancient Chinese legend. This story, too, told of a girl who dressed as a man to join the army in her father's place. The poem Mu-lan shih, or "The Ballad of Mulan," dates to the sixth century. In 1593, the story became a play known as "The Heroine Mulan Goes to War in Her Father's Place."

It was further expounded in the 1695 novel Romance of the Sui and Tang. Some have speculated that Mulan may have been a historical person, while others regard the story as mere folklore.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Mulan
1. Begin by drawing a "U" shaped line to outline Mulan's chin. Then, extend two curved lines downward to form the neck.
2. Use long, curved lines to sketch Mulan's hair. Draw a sweeping, upside down "V" shaped line across the top of the face, noting the pointed whisp of hair across the forehead. The top of the scalp should be "U" shaped, with pointed tendrils of hair along the sides.
3. Sketch Mulan's kimono. Use curved lines for the shoulders, and extend pairs of lines from each side of the neck to form the garment's collar. Connect the collar using two horizontal curved lines.
4. Use long, curved lines to sketch Mulan's arm.
5. Draw a curved line to complete the outline of Mulan's torso. Then, draw pairs of curved lines across the waist, forming the kimono's belt or obi.
6. Use overlapping curved lines to sketch Mulan's arm and hips.
7. Use curved lines to draw Mulan's eyebrows, pointed at each end.
8. Sketch Mulan's eyes. Use curved lines to draw shapes that are pointed at each corner. Thickly shade the upper lid. Draw an oval within an oval in each eye, and shade between them to indicate the pupil. Indicate the eyelid using a curved line above each eye.
9. Use curved lines to outline Mulan's nose and lips.
Color Mulan. She has black hair and wears a blue and green kimono with a red belt. You can draw these cherry blossoms to recreate the famous scene from the movie. Remember, "The flower that blooms in adversity is often the rarest and most beautiful of all."
